Turn the planisphere according to the season and the direction your facing. Hold it above your head. You can match what's on the planisphere and what's in the night sky. Fun.What is a simple book showing clear maps of the sky, and basic stars; i.e north star, venus, the bear etc?
The best source for beginners is a book called Nightwatch by T. Dickinson. It has very easy to use charts that are printed on heavy stock so that they don't get easily dew damaged and that show dark stars on white background so they can be seen at night. Most charts and planetarium software cannot easily be used at the scope, but this is designed for that purpose. The book has lots of excellent advice and is filled with pictures that are very helpful. I recommend it highly.
I recommend a book called simply 'The Stars' by H.A. Rey. Very easy to understand. It got me hooked on stargazing.
