Or... Are winter nights better cause there are less hours of sunlight? Are winter nights just as good as summer nights for star gazing if the nights are equally as clear?
Winter nights are much better than summer nights for viewing the wonders of the universe, reason is that in the winter there is less moister and pollution in the air to disrupt light waves.
In the summer you have high moister levels along with pollution and heat rising which all distorts the light from the objects in the universe. Are winter nights just as good as summer nights for star gazing if the nights are equally as clear?
I find winter better because it gets dark sooner, so I do not have to stay up as late, and it seems to usually be clearer in the winter.
However, the benifits of summer are that is warmer. (although sometimes I find myself actually preferring the cold night air in the winter)
Finally, there are different things to see in the sky each season, so neither is better or worse, just different.
Despite the appearance of sparkling winter nights, they are less good for observing, at least when there is snow on the ground, because that increases the light pollution. At northern latitudes, winter nights are often too cold for observing, both because of human and equipment failure at low temperatures.
Winter nights are nice because it gets dark earlier. But my favorite observing season is early fall. It still gets dark pretty early, but the weather is warm, the humidity is usually low, and the bugs are pretty scarce. Best of all, from my northern location, there are plenty of early evening things to see in the fall.
sometimes it is better sometimes worse
it depends where you go
in the city it is not as dark in the winter because of the snow
outside the urban area it is great!
the vision is always better because of less interference from heat (infrared light)
Guru
Winter tends to be better due to better seeing.
Have you ever noticed that shimmer effect on a hot road? Hot air can cause interference that makes astronomical observations blurrier. You get much better results in cold air.
probably not. winters aren't as clear. and besides, do you want to sit outside in the middle of winter? hahha. i would stick to summer(:
